The report suggests that the problem is with the sporting options provided by schools, as it claims that 74% of girls said they would like to be more active, but are put off by school PE lessons and school sports. The WSFF suggests that girls and boys do the same amount of exercise at a young age (in Year 4), but that by Year 6, the girls are falling behind. The gap widens yet further by Year 9. This would certainly seem to support the theory that girls become more put off by PE as they get older, perhaps due to embarrassment and concerns with appearance as they hit their early teens. The figures certainly support this theory, as 48% of the girls surveyed complained that getting sweaty is “not feminine”, while nearly a third revealed fears that boys did not find sporty girls “feminine”. The statistics further suggest that school sport is angled too specifically towards competition and rivalry, with 45% of girls labelling it “too competitive” and over half of all respondents agreeing that there are greater opportunities for boys to succeed in sport than girls. So it seems that fears of failure in the eyes of others, doubt about their own sporting abilities, lack of enjoyment of competitive games and worries about looking unattractive are all major factors discouraging girls from participating fully in school sport. The question is; what can be done to entice them back to PE? The WSFF suggests that the responsibility lies with schools to make sport more enjoyable and attractive to girls, perhaps by introducing more girl-friendly sports such as ‘zumba’ and roller-blading. But there are also fears that this could worsen sexist problems such as girls who play traditional sports being bullied for being too ‘masculine’, or female sports being labelled less serious and challenging than those played by men. Perhaps a more favourable idea would be to incentivise school sports again for girls by reducing the competitive element and celebrating those at all levels of the game, or by ensuring single-sex PE sessions to allow girls to enjoy sport uninhibited by fears about boys’ reactions. Another crucial step will be to increase the number of female sporting figures featured in the media, as 43% of the female pupils surveyed agreed that “there aren’t many sporting role models for girls”. Of course in the long run, it will be much more important to tackle the root causes of such insecurities, and this study certainly seems to reveal the need for a serious investigation into the reasons why young girls are becoming so concerned about the opinions of boys and so convinced of stereotypical, media-driven standards of ‘femininity’ and attractiveness that they are overtaking their concerns with their own physical health in the first place.

In â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, the narrator starts to realize things about the woman behind the wallpaper that she sees in herself. She can relate to the woman trying to get out and break free. She can hear the woman behind the wallpaper talking to her and it relates to her own personal thoughts, and this is why she feels obligated to help the woman escape from behind the paper. However, we are still sending foreign aid to Iraq, building Iraqi schools, hospitals, prisons, and fortifying their country’s security but it does not look like the money is going to stop going into Iraq. If the United States spends 165 million dollars on one hospital, one can only imagine the cost of rebuilding schools during war time; as well as imagine how many of those schools were destroyed intentionally and unintentionally during or after their construction because of said war. America’s public school system drastically needs help and no one is coming up with any solutions but budget cuts. The American public school system is already the victim of systematic budget cuts are now getting ready for another huge blow to their financial status; one some say that is going to cripple our youth’s outlooks on a better education. † Education Weekly reported that â€Å"the spending bill that President Barack Obama signed into law March 2 severed current fiscal-year funding for several literacy programs at the Education Department as a part of a government- wide reduction of $4 billion† (Rose). For an example, Arizona has taken hard drastic cuts recently. Classroom sizes have grown from 24 children per teacher to roughly 30 plus children per classroom. After school and during school education enhancement studies to help children who fall below the average or have special learning needs eave all but been eliminated. In previous years, children who may not have passed a subject were allowed the opportunity to attend intercession, a program during the school breaks where they attend class for a few hours a day over a two week time frame intended to get them back on track. Unfortunately, as of the 2009-2010 school year, Circle Cross Ranch, a local elementary in San Tan Valley Arizona, now requires parents pay $25 per class session if a child fails at any point in time the classes are mandatory. In Phoenix, they are experiencing even more of an unnecessary set back. The city as had a drastic decline in their hiring for the 2010-2011 school year. Roughly 7,400 public-school teaching positions have been eliminated across the state because of budget cuts proposed by the Legislature, according to Arizona Educators Association spokesman John Heartfelt (Quinn). With the amount of children that are still enrolling and moving into the Phoenix area, this only bodes ill for the amount of attention each child will receive. Education is important to the growth of any society and if that keeps getting hit time and time again with no solutions on how to fix that budget crisis, things will only get worse. The amount of educational Jobs are decreasing but the amount of applicants only increase. The educational Job market is being flooded with teachers that have experienced the layoffs and cut backs, while schools hiring, go for the more seasoned experienced teachers. Internships have been eliminated across the board for new teachers because the Jobs Just are not readily available eliminating many of the opportunities for young teachers. Kerry, a 4th grade teacher for xx Elementary in xx, has felt the pinch of educational budget cuts along with thousands of other teachers. XX teaches a very owe-income community with children that speak more Spanish than English and she struggles some days to provide the best educational experience she can. â€Å"The school just cant afford what we need and its sad. I have children that come to school almost every day hungry because they don’t have proper meals at home. They come to school with no supplies because their parents can’t afford them. As a teacher, how can I sit by and watch my students go with out the fundamental things that they need to get an education? † XX stated that she spends over $500 every year on school supplies that she does not get reimbursed for, â€Å"l have to do it. If I don’t, no one will and these children don’t deserve to suffer because of our budget cuts. How can they learn if they have no paper to write on or a pencil to write with? † When asked about the financial crisis the schools are experiencing, she replied, â€Å"Its sad and disturbing at the same time. How can I teach properly without the books and tools required to teach!? I know this sounds selfish, but doesn’t they saying go, you need to help yourself before you can help others? If we [Americans] keep giving everything away, there’s not going to be anything left for us to help ourselves. We could have so much more for our own kids! America’s future are its children, those children are not educated properly, who’s fault is that going to be? No matter who’s fault it is, the problem needs to be corrected sooner rather than later. The United States has received a hazardous blows over the past few years with several crippling hurricanes, oil spills and a continued economic and financial crisis. The United States is falling further and f urther into debt with the war in Iraq and an economic crisis that has America considered ‘rich nations’ among one of the poorest (Belittler). If the United States cut back some of the foreign aid given to the same countries regularly, then those countries receiving the public assistance will have no choice but to learn how to support themselves. By continuing to give aid and support them without teaching them how to figure out how to do it for themselves, the problem only gets worse. It Just seems that the United States is giving a lot of more hand outs while its own citizens are suffering. New Declaration Oof Independece Each year, deluging masses of populace from foreign nations flock to America. Here, they believe they will receive the chance to embrace, savor, and exercise true Freedom. Surely, this land of wondrous opportunities would encompass them in her fruitful prosperity! But is it really a land liberated from the fetters of suppression? Are Americans as tolerant and pleasantly liberal as perceived to be? If not, then a formidable and hefty query arises: What is an American? A liberated America's building blocks are the elixirs of Equality, Freedom, and democracy. What, then, would undermine the basic structures of America more than racism? Yet, try as we might, we cannot utterly annihilate the lurking plague of racism. It persistently resurfaces and hoists up its sordid visage. It is enough to make one contemplate upon the apparently indubitable democratic core of the Americans comprising of this enlightened democratic nation. Some Americans, however, do at least occasionally try to conceal biases through thinly gilded veneers of false enthusiasm. This, of course, is not to say that all Americans exhibit partialities- merely that those who do demonstrate a high capacity for concealment. On a more comical note, Americans are stereotypically depicted as obnoxiously crass and stentorian by the cultured European countries such as the wine- drinking French. Americans may appear to seem loud when advocating causes and obligations thought to be ethically seemly. We become active and operative when championing for a motive. But often, Americans are vocal in general, and quite argumentative in nature. Americans, raised with society's supposedly intense notions of Freedom, Liberty, and Justice abstractly as fundamental standards for sustenance, will not stand for a silencing of their sentiments and expressions. Americans are renowned for their outspoken, articulate, and often too- liberal mannerism. It is also stated that we are brassy, insensitive to the emotions of others, and ill- mannered, paragoned to the polished disposition of the refined Europeans. These are accusations Americans are fondly assailed with, though there just may be a rudiment of veracity to them...... Americans, in a sense, are sound depictions of humanity. We try to demonstrate to the rest of mankind that we are broad- minded and progressive, tolerant and encouraged. Yet, our flaws, and accordingly, the blemishes of humanity, are exposed in full bloom. As with all matters, Americans are in and of themselves oxymoronic, unveiling both the agreeable and iniquitous facets of humankind. Political Issues Essays
